We have been visiting this little corner eatery in Kalk Bay for years. It is always packed but worth waiting in line for. Be warned this place is all about the food, the service is a bit “meh” because they are always so busy and I must admit the waiters are endearingly odd. The venue is a little dilapidated but that is all part of it’s charm. Definitely not a place for uptight OCD peeps. Having said all that – We’ve never been disappointed, the food is always delicious. Good, hearty, no-nonsense bistro fare.
Once seated you get a plate full of sliced freshly baked ciabatta from their bakery just around the corner. We dip the bread in lots of grassy olive oil and balsamic and munch away while reading their lunch menu of the day on the chalkboard. Â There are usually two soup and salad options which are ALWAYS divine. The seafood is a hit. Fresh mussels in white wine and cream sauce, line fish of the day with as sumptuous side dish and sauce and the seafood linguini in a rich tomato sauce is my absolute favourite. They also do awesome red meat dishes of the day (anything from burgers, steak, lamb chops etc). Let me just say, the portions are HUGE!
I thought I’d share my favourite dishes – If these are on the menu for the day, I will order it without question. Creature of habit, yes.
Mussels in white wine and cream sauce. So fresh, it tastes of the ocean. Plump and juicy. You can order a full or half portion. We usually order a full and share as a starter with lots of that moreish ciabatta for mopping up all that glorious sauce.
IÂ can’t express how much I love this dish. They make the most amazing rich tomato based sauce that I’m just addicted to. The linguini swims in the sauce with prawns, mussels, line fish and calamari. Make sure you adorn this bowl of deliciousness with lots of grated parmesan. OMG! I’m hungry just thinking about it.
If you love sour citrusy desserts, do yourself a favour and order this Lemon Tart. Perfectly short pastry and the creamy lemon filling is to die for, so tart is will tear you up and possibly cramp your jaw but it’s so worth it. They brulee the top for extra crunch which I love. Served with creme fraiche and seasonal fruit. Yum Yum Yum! Order with a flat white or macchiato – they make good coffee too.
Be sure to pop in at their bakery (with the red door) and stock up on some artisanal breads and pastries.
So all in all. It’s all about the food. Come with an open mind and a patient heart – you will not regret it.

1st October 2014 1:49 pmThe Linguini di mare is my all time favourite dish at O Cafe. Maybe even anywhere. I cannot get enough of it. They roast their tomatoes with carrots etc for hours to deepen the flavour. I also eat all the bread they provide and love their house Sauvignon Blanc. Its bliss for me after a morning on the beach.

2nd October 2014 12:19 pmI am so glad you are in agreement with me about the linguini, it truly is the best I’ve had, I’m sure. And I can totally believe that they roast the tomatoes etc first, you can really taste the depth of flavour. I think I need to pay them a visit this weekend – having withdrawals. LOL. Thanks for stopping by Sam xx
