Hello, I’m Carey

Welcome to my virtual foodie space. A happy little hub for fuss free & delicious recipes. Occasionally I share bit & bobs on travel, restaurants, and other food related news.

I am a South African, currently residing in Kuwait with my husband and 3 fur-children. Being in the Middle East, I am loving all the modern & traditional food experiences and ingredients we are exposed to, it inspires me to constantly research, experiment and create.

My love for food is all consuming. Food is not just my job, it is my life.

Having an ND in Food Science & Nutrition (2004), my career was set for Food Product Development but veered more toward Recipe Development and Styling. After working in various roles in the industry in London and Cape Town, I spent a good part of my career with a leading food retailer as a resident food consultant and cookery teacher. This job was multi-faceted. Recipe development using new products on the shelves, bespoke cooking classes for customers, food events, catering and writing food features and styling thereof for printed newsletters and recipe supplements. We were the go-to department for anything food related.

Food blogging started becoming ‘’a thing’’ and I was intrigued. So, I started a random food blog, Bits of Carey. The intention was to have an outlet (from my full-time foodie job) where I share recipes I prepare at home. It was also to keep myself in the loop, as the food scene was starting to change. I am grateful I kept at it as food blogging boomed even more, this is when my freelance recipe development and food styling opportunities started – 2010. In my free time I took this work on. In 2013, I decided to work in my own capacity and never looked back.

I have worked with many wonderful clients that have made my freelance career so rewarding. From running around on set with 20 samples of colour corrected jam and 800 identical waffles for a Polish TV commercial to working on fast paced weekly TVC Commercials for Food Lover’s Market. Creating monthly recipes for online magazine features and advertorials to recipe development for various food and wine brands. Developing recipes for South Africa’s leading Meal Kit Company, Ucook, to developing the menu and kitchen operations of the award-winning French Boutique Creperie, Swan Cafe. Styling restaurant menus to creating social media food content. This is what I do. Every client, brief or project is wonderfully unique.

The collaboration opportunities on my own blog and social media platforms has also been a blessing. I do not like the word influencer, but rather – a brand partner who is providing a professional service.

I work tirelessly to bring solid food knowledge & experience, creativity, seasoned styling abilities and social media savvy to ‘’the table’’.
